Rare and Endangered Species

On 1, July 2020 there were 3216 taxonomic units registered in Pasvik Nature Reserve. Some of them are on Red Lists:

  • 4 species on the IUCN Red List;
  • 22 species in the Red Data Book of Russia;
  • 117 species in the Red Data Book of Murmansk Region.

33 bird species and 6 mammal species are in the Red Data Book of Murmansk Region (2014):

  • 16 of them are permanent inhabitants of the nature reserve;

  • 17 of bird species were observed only once in the nature reserve, its surrounding area and the Norwegian bank of the Pasvik River (vagrant and transient species).

Red book categories:

  • 0 — may be extinct in the region;
  • 1a — critically endangered;
  • 1b — endangered;
  • 2 — vulnerable, including those with decreasing populations;
  • 3 — rare, near threatened;
  • 4 — data deficient;
  • 5 — special conservation status.
Vertebrates, permanently inhabiting the area, belong to the following categories of the Red Data Book of Murmansk Region (2014):



  • category 2 — vulnerable, including those with decreasing populations: 3 bird species (peregrine falcon, gyrfalcon, ural owl) and 1 mammal species (eurasian otter);

  • category 3 — rare, near threatened: 11 bird species (whooper swan, shrew, osprey, golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, common kestrel, common crane, eurasian dotterel, broad-billed sandpiper, great grey owl, great grey shrike) and 2 mammal species (eurasian least shrew, northern bat);

  • category 4 — data deficient: 2 bird species (greylag goose, white-throated dipper) and 2 mammal species (lynx, roe deer)
